Is Dundee FC prepared to sell the future to buy the past?

It is possible that Dundee Football Club’s purchase of the services of the veteran Scottish internationalist Kenny Miller may be a short term boost to the club but, with respect, 38 years old Miller’s greatest playing days are probably in the past. I hope I am proved wrong. It seems the move could be financed by the sale of Dundee FC's exceptional "Dundee through and through" young player, 21 years old Craig Wighton. Here is a player who already, in a very short career has suffered a serious injury playing for Dundee in a meaningless friendly fixture against a Bristol City reserve team. This match kept him out of football for a whole season.  Wighton, who has been helped to develop through the youth ranks of Dundee FC, is an exceptionally gifted footballer but it seems Dundee have failed to give him the necessary encouragement and training input necessary to have settled him into a regular place in the Dundee senior side.

Craig Wighton celebrates scoring the winner against United

Heart of Midlothian, a club with  an excellent record of bringing on young players, seem willing to spend £250,000 to sign Craig Wighton.  Hearts clearly believe Craig Wighton, who has represented his country at all the youth age levels, has a good future in Scottish Premier League football.

If this deal goes ahead Dundee will have sold the future to buy the past.

PS. The deal went through today, 30th August, 2018: Craig Wighton is no longer a Dundee player. He plays for Hearts. Talking to the media Neil McCann, Dundee manager said that Wighton hadn't been in good form recently and perhaps now was a good time for the player to move on. I wonder if Mr McCann ever reflects on his own performance. How has his form as a manager been? Is it time for him to think about moving on?
